DESCRIPTION

Pagode is a genre of Brazilian music, which was originally from the state of Bahia and quickly became widespread throughout Brazil, especially in Rio de Janeiro as subgenre of Samba. Pagode was originally a celebration of life with a large amount of food, music, and party. In 1978, figures such as Beth Carvalho and Zeca Pagodinho became really famous by playing this type of music. This genre started to become more original and more separated from Samba, a different Brazilian genre, as it began to include local vernacular and slang. The originality of the genre also developed with the help of the Fundo de Quintal band.

Pagode provides an unique audiotopia for Brazilians and many other people in the world. This type of music has the power to make people feel better, happier, and more relaxed. It is a perfect escape for people who are stressed with work, school, and many other demands of modern society. This "feel good" type of music is becoming more widespread as Latin music has gained popularity in America culture. Pagode has the ability to bring people together and its perfect to listen to any time of the day.

Beth Carvalho

Beth Carvalho studied music in the National College in Brazil and in the early 60’s she used to participate in some concerts of this old genre in Brazil called Bossa Nova.  In 1971, she recorded the “samba-theme” in the southern part of the country, and since then she established herself as a samba artist. From then, she became one of the pioneers in the creation of pagode.

  • In those tracks above, you can notice that the influence of samba is very strong, especially because those three artists/bands are specialists in samba like Beth Carvalhoe Zeca Pagodinho. Fundo de Quintal is a band more towards pagode, but all of them somehow helped to create, develop and spread the genre of pagode in Brazil.
  • The 1990's was the season that pagode really became popular. Pagode became famous in the 90's because the lyrics of the songs usually were talking about love, passion, and women. So now some examples of some bands and artists that succeeded in the 90’s to help make pagode what it is today.

  •  Now in this section I will provide some examples of pagode since the year 2000 until these days. You will notice that the rhythm itself doesn't change much from what we heard in the 90's. The genre is still the same, and the best quality about it is that the bands only have to adjust a little bit to the new generation with some new instruments and new styles. Everyone has enjoyed it since the 80's.
